Your smile reflects your energy and personality — and when you're not happy with it, you notice it in every photo and every conversation. Smile design brings together art and science to plan a smile that suits your whole face, not just your teeth. Done well, it's highly personal: the same treatment can look stunning on one person and artificial on another. That's why the planning matters as much as the treatment itself — and why, in many cases, you can preview your new smile before anything permanent is done.

1. What Is Smile Design?

Smile design is a personalised planning process that combines a careful analysis of your face, lips, gums and teeth with your own wishes to create a treatment plan for a more attractive, balanced and healthy smile. It looks at tooth colour, shape, size and position, your lip line, your gum line and how all of these relate to your facial features.

Smile design is not a single treatment. Depending on your needs, it may involve just whitening and a few bonded edges — or a combination of gum contouring, veneers, crowns, implants or orthodontics. Turkey, and Antalya in particular, has become a popular destination for smile design thanks to modern digital dentistry and lower costs than many European countries.

The golden rule: the best smile design achieves your goal with the least invasive treatment possible — preserving healthy natural teeth wherever it can.

2. Who Is Smile Design Suitable For?

Smile design can help if you:

  • Are unhappy with the colour of your teeth
  • Have chipped, worn, uneven or oddly shaped teeth
  • Have gaps, mild crowding or teeth that look too short
  • Show a lot of gum when you smile, or have an uneven gum line
  • Have old fillings or crowns that no longer match
  • Have missing teeth that affect your smile
  • Find yourself hiding your teeth when you smile or laugh
Health comes first: decay, gum disease or bite problems need treating before cosmetic work begins. A beautiful result only lasts on a healthy foundation — see our gum disease guide.

3. What Your Dentist Analyses in a Smile

A smile design plan is built on a detailed analysis. These are the key elements dentists look at:

Element What It Means Why It Matters
Facial midline The centre line of your face compared with the centre of your front teeth A well-aligned midline makes a smile look balanced
Smile line The curve of your upper teeth edges compared with your lower lip A curve that follows the lower lip tends to look youthful and natural
Tooth display How much of your teeth shows at rest and when smiling Teeth that show too little can look aged; too much can look unnatural
Tooth proportions The width-to-length ratio of each tooth and between neighbouring teeth Harmonious proportions are key to a natural look
Gum line The height and symmetry of the gums around the front teeth An even gum line frames the teeth
Shade and texture Colour, translucency and surface detail of the teeth The right shade suits your skin tone and eyes
Bite and function How your teeth meet when you chew and speak A smile must work as well as it looks

Proportion "rules", such as the golden proportion, are useful guides — but every face is different, and your dentist adapts them to you rather than forcing a template.

4. Digital Smile Design and the Mock-Up: See It Before You Commit

One of the biggest advances in cosmetic dentistry is the ability to preview your smile before treatment. Here's how it works:

Digital design

Photos, videos and 3D scans of your teeth are used to design your new smile digitally, taking your face and lips into account.

The mock-up ("trial smile")

In many cases, the design is transferred to your mouth as a temporary tooth-coloured mock-up placed over your teeth — usually without any drilling. You can look in the mirror, smile, speak and take photos.

Refine together

If you'd like the teeth slightly shorter, rounder or a different shade, the design can be adjusted before any permanent treatment begins.

Is a mock-up always possible? Not always. If teeth are significantly out of position, missing or need extensive treatment first, a full mock-up may not be practical. Your dentist will then use digital simulations and step-by-step planning instead.

5. The Smile Design Process, Step by Step

Step 1 — Consultation and goals

You share what you'd like to change and how you want your smile to feel — natural, bright, subtle or bold. Many patients start online with photos.

Step 2 — Examination, photos and scans

Your dentist checks your teeth, gums and bite, takes X-rays if needed, and records detailed photos and digital scans.

Step 3 — Digital smile design

Your new smile is designed digitally around your facial features.

Step 4 — Mock-up and approval

Where possible, you try the design in your mouth. Treatment only begins once you're happy with the plan.

Step 5 — Treatment

The agreed treatments are carried out in the right order — for example, gum treatment first, whitening next, then veneers or crowns made in our in-house laboratory.

Step 6 — Final check and aftercare

Fit, bite and appearance are checked, and you receive personalised aftercare advice to protect your result.

6. Treatments Used in Smile Design

Treatment What It Does Tooth Preparation
Teeth whitening Brightens natural teeth None
Composite bonding Repairs chips, closes small gaps, refines edges Usually little or none
Porcelain / E-max veneers Changes colour and shape of front teeth Minimal to moderate
Zirconia or E-max crowns Restores weakened or heavily damaged teeth More extensive
Gum contouring Evens out the gum line or reduces excess gum Gum tissue only
Dental implants Replaces missing teeth Surgical; neighbouring teeth usually untouched
Orthodontics / clear aligners Moves teeth into better positions None

Zirconia is mainly used for crowns and bridges, while E-max ceramic is commonly chosen for veneers thanks to its translucency. Your dentist will recommend the right material for each tooth.

Treating a gummy smile

If a lot of gum shows when you smile, the cause determines the solution. When the teeth are partly covered by gum, gum contouring — with a laser or conventional technique — can reveal more of the tooth. If the cause is bone or tooth position, crown lengthening or orthodontics may be needed. Your dentist will assess the cause before recommending anything.

7. Natural or Hollywood? Choosing Your Style

There's no single "perfect" smile. Some patients want a subtle refresh that friends can't quite put their finger on; others want a bright, camera-ready Hollywood smile. Both are valid — what matters is that the result suits your face and age.

  Natural Smile Hollywood Smile
Shade Natural-bright (e.g. 1M1, 1M2) Brighter bleach shades (e.g. 0M1–0M3)
Shape Subtle variation, natural edges and texture More uniform, defined shapes
Often chosen by Patients who want an "is it real?" result Patients who want a striking, bold look

Tip: a well-designed smile follows a few timeless principles — clean, healthy teeth; upper front teeth that show naturally when you smile; a gentle smile curve that follows the lower lip; and a shade that harmonises with your skin tone.

8. Does It Hurt, How Long Does It Take and How Long Does It Last?

Does smile design hurt?

Procedures such as tooth preparation or gum contouring are carried out under local anaesthesia, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment. Some sensitivity or tenderness afterwards is normal and usually short-lived.

How long does it take?

It depends on your plan. Whitening and bonding can often be done in one or two visits. Veneers or crowns typically take around a week in Antalya. Implants or orthodontics need more time and sometimes several visits.

How long does it last?

With good care, porcelain and zirconia restorations can last many years; bonding may need occasional polishing or repair, and whitening fades gradually. No restoration lasts forever, so regular check-ups matter.

Plan Type Typical Time in Antalya
Whitening + bonding Often 1–3 days
Veneers or crowns Often around 5–7 days
Smile design with implants Usually two trips, with healing in between

Timeframes are a guide only and are confirmed after your assessment.

9. Smile Design Cost in Turkey

Because smile design is personalised, there's no fixed price. Your cost depends on the number of teeth, the treatments and materials chosen and any preparatory care needed. As a guide, indicative prices at our clinic have included around £160–£200 per zirconia crown, £200–£240 per veneer and £120–£160 per tooth for composite bonding.

Prices are indicative ranges last updated in 2025 and are confirmed in a written plan after your assessment. For a full comparison, see our UK vs Turkey dental prices guide.

11. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is smile design?

Smile design is a personalised planning process that analyses your face, lips, gums and teeth to create a treatment plan for a more balanced, attractive and healthy smile. It may involve one treatment or a combination.

Who is smile design suitable for?

It can help people who are unhappy with the colour, shape or size of their teeth, have chips, gaps or worn edges, show a lot of gum when smiling, have mismatched old restorations or missing teeth. Teeth and gums need to be healthy first.

Can I see my new smile before treatment?

In many cases, yes. Your smile can be designed digitally and, where suitable, transferred to your mouth as a temporary mock-up so you can see and feel the result before any permanent treatment.

Is a mock-up always possible?

Not always. If teeth are significantly out of position, missing or need extensive treatment first, a full mock-up may not be practical, and your dentist will use digital simulations and staged planning instead.

How long does smile design take?

It depends on your plan. Whitening and bonding can often be done in one to three days, veneers or crowns typically take around five to seven days in Antalya, and plans involving implants usually need two trips.

Does smile design hurt?

Procedures such as tooth preparation or gum contouring are carried out under local anaesthesia, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment. Some sensitivity or tenderness afterwards is normal and usually short-lived.

Is smile design permanent?

Restorations such as veneers and crowns can last many years with good care, but no restoration lasts forever. Bonding may need occasional repair, and whitening fades gradually. Regular check-ups help protect your result.

Which treatments are used in smile design?

Common treatments include teeth whitening, composite bonding, porcelain or E-max veneers, zirconia or E-max crowns, gum contouring, dental implants and orthodontics. Your dentist recommends the least invasive combination that meets your goals.

What is the difference between veneers and crowns in smile design?

Veneers cover the front surface of a tooth and usually need less preparation, while crowns cover the whole tooth and are used for weakened or heavily damaged teeth. E-max is common for veneers; zirconia is mainly used for crowns.

Can a gummy smile be corrected?

Often, yes. If teeth are partly covered by gum, gum contouring can reveal more of the tooth. If the cause is bone or tooth position, crown lengthening or orthodontics may be needed. The cause is assessed first.

Can I choose a natural look instead of very white teeth?

Absolutely. You can choose natural-bright shades such as 1M1 or brighter Hollywood shades. Your dentist will help you pick a shade that suits your skin tone and face.

Do I need to have healthy teeth before smile design?

Yes. Decay, gum disease or bite problems should be treated first, as a cosmetic result only lasts on a healthy foundation.

How much does smile design cost in Turkey?

There's no fixed price because every plan is personalised. As a guide, indicative prices at our clinic have included around £160–£200 per zirconia crown, £200–£240 per veneer and £120–£160 per tooth for bonding. Your final price is confirmed after assessment.

Will my smile design look natural?

A good smile design is planned around your face, lips and preferences, with attention to shape, proportion, texture and shade. Previewing the design with a mock-up helps ensure you're happy with the look.

Can I start my smile design consultation online?

Yes. Send us natural smile photos and close-ups of your teeth on WhatsApp. We'll share initial thoughts and an estimated plan, which is confirmed after an in-person examination.

Can I combine smile design with a holiday in Antalya?

Many patients do. Plans such as whitening, bonding, veneers or crowns often fit into a stay of a few days to about a week, leaving time to enjoy Antalya.
